Mokopane is also renowned for its mineral and botanical significance The town of Pieter Potgietersrus was founded in 1858 and named in memory of Commandant General Pieter Potgieter who was killed near Makapansgat in 1854. The name changed to Potgietersrus in 1890 and then again in 2002 to Mokopane. The town was named after the Ndebele Chief Mokopane, who was also known as Makapan.
